Why is Crowns needed after RCT?

A dental crown is most essential step after the root canal treatment. A crown helps in restoring the function of chewing, provides strength to the tooth structure and protects the tooth from any fracture further. It makes teeth to survive for longer period of time. A dental crown or cap is a tooth shaped, placed over a root canal treated tooth to restore its shape and size, strength and improve the appearance. The crown encases the entire visible portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum lines.

What is RCT?

When the innermost part of the tooth, known as the pulp which contains the blood vessels, nerves and living connective tissues get infected or damaged or inflamed, the procedure used to treat such conditions are known as Root Canal Treatment or endodontic treatment. This treatment is performed by root canal specialist or endodontist.

When is RCT required?

The most common causes of tooth damage is tooth decay which occur due to plaque accumulation, cracked or broken tooth due to any accidents, gum diseases . Such issues lead to pulp inflammation, infection and damage the pulp irreversibly resulting in excruciating pain. It is always advisable to see a dentist immediately whenever one experiences a toothache or gum pain. The pulp is the most sensitive part of the tooth as it is connected to blood vessels. RCT is a conservative treatment option to eliminate the pain without extracting the teeth.

What is RCT

RCT is a treatment method which helps save a tooth from decaying and infection by repairing it. The nerve of the tooth and the pulp which develops are both removed from the tooth in order to clean up the inside of the tooth and then later it is sealed. It is very crucial to get a root canal treated as it can cause infection in the surrounding teeth as well and even lead to the formation of abscesses.

Steps of RCT

The step by step process of carrying out the root canal treatment involves the following steps:

  1. The area surrounding the tooth including the tooth is numbed under local anesthesia.
  2. The second step involves the process of drilling an opening through the crown in order to gain access to the chamber of pulp. An endodontist is the one who expertise in this process.
  3. The cleaning process is what happens next and it is carried out with the help of files and the diseased and infected dead pup are removed out of the canals.
  4. This step involves the use of disinfectants in order to ensure that no infections arise at this spot after the process is completed.
  5. The canals are then filled up with filings and sealed after they are given shape with the help of instruments so that they can be filled properly.
  6. The last step involves the placement of a seal on top of the filling in order to keep it intact till the time a crown or cap is placed on the top of the infected tooth and then it is cemented to avoid further dislodging in future.

Who Needs it

RCT becomes essential for a person when the pup gets infected or inflamed because of deep decay or consecutive procedures on the tooth or any other reason. Anyone who has an infected pulp that is the soft tissue that is present within the root canal needs immediate medical attention as well as treatment.

Precautions to be Taken

Following is the list of few precautions that need to be taken before and after going through an RCT:

  • Take good care of your tooth and make sure there are no cracks or breaks otherwise get it immediate attention of a dentist.
  • Don’t put a lot of stress on the infected tooth before or right after the procedure.
  • Soft foods and fluid should be preferred for the time being.
  • Brushing should be carried out in a very gentle manner.

What to expect after RCT treatment?

One can expect some pain in the teeth after the treatment along with swelling. With time, pain and swelling will heal gradually. It is advised to get crown over the root canal treated tooth to prevent it from any kind of accidental damage. The Dentists advise regular brushing, flossing and inter-dental brushes to keep the treated tooth clean and plaque free. Periodic follow up visits must be taken seriously to trace and monitor the restored teeth and gums.

Precautions to be taken immediately after RCT

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 30 minutes.
  • Avoid hard crunchy foods from the side of the treatment for approx. a day.
  • Maintain a good oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Take the antibiotics as advised by the dentist.
